Virtual Workshop Experiment
Registering is closed - Please check out the rest of the workshops to see what’s upcoming.
Description - Please join me for an online painting workshop of the still life. All participants and I will paint the same still life layout simultaneously, step by step. Participants will log into a private, password-secured video chat room for 3 hours on 2 consecutive days and paint along with me as we develop the form and color of a still life…. floral or fruit with some kind of metal or glass, haven’t decided. Each step will be explained, including laying out the drawing, mixing the palette, applying each layer, modeling and blending (or not blending), and finishing the painting. Critiques will be offered individually after each session (you’ll send a picture of your your work). A copy of the entire workshop (.flv) will be sent for your continued use.
Cost - $10 via Paypal (to cover materials, $15 outside US to over add’l postage. Ongoing workshops will be at a higher rate TBD, probably closer to $100.)
When - Saturday April 4 and Sunday April 5, 11 am CST (GMT -6) to 2 pm
Provided - High-res photo of the still life we’ll all be using via snail mail. Transparency of the still life via snail mail. High-res digital copy. 2 written critiques (via email, 1 for each stage of your work). .flv movie of each 2 hour session. Live video of me doing the painting as you do the painting, with explanations and artistic ramblings, just like always.
Materials - You provide the oil painting materials, hard work, and show up when the sessions begin. You’ll have to have a camera with which to capture a decent image of the work you’ve done so I can offer critique. A full materials list including paint hues, brushes and panel/canvas size will be sent to participants.
Experimental results - Because this is an experiment to test and refine the possibility of future workshops, I’d also like feedback and suggestions from each participant on improvements. Each participant must agree that I can use a photo of their results to promote future workshops at my discretion.
Why - I think the virtual workshop could work really well. It has some limitations - we can’t work from life, and I can’t see what you’re doing as your doing it. But it also has some awesome benefits - you can be from anywhere in the world, there’s no travel or accommodation costs, you get a written critique, and you get to keep a video of the whole thing.

Lisa,
I think this virtual workshop idea is very clever. At the moment, (and for the next month or so) my studio is torn down and I’m limited to outdoor sketching. Also I’ll be in Long Beach for Pacific Coast Champ. the 5th. Sooo I won’t be able to join you but I will be thinking and waiting to read on the blog about your thoughts on how it went after you finish. I do think Sundays are great since only weekends would work for me as i work my day job Mon.-Fri.
Steve
Please note the dates were changed because I forgot Easter, silly me. Dates are now April 4 and 5, 11am cst to 2 pm cst.
