TIPS: Jars

Save your jars.  I snag all the little glass jars from food and spices before they hit the recycling, and I have quite the little stash in my “danger bin”.

Danger Bin: the acro bin designated for all solvents, mediums, exacto blades, box cutters, and dynamite caps.

Every time I mix up a medium, I put it into a smaller jar.  That way I only have to mix a small batch at a time, and should it become polluted with color, or start to act funny like the solvent has evaporated or it’s started to dry for some reason, I only have a small amount to discard.

If you keep your mineral spirits used for brush cleaning for a long time - eventually, the pigments will settle out and you’ll have mineral spirits you can use for brush cleaning again!

If there’s a kid in your neighborhood, or in your house, I think you know the jars I mean.  If not, then olives, spices, tapenade, pimiento, jellies, etc etc, all make great (and great smelling) containers.  The lil jelly ones you get in some fancy restaurants are great for your pochade box btw!

Hello! First of all, I love your blog, thanks for all the wonderful tips! I was wondering how you went about disposing of used mediums and solvents? We had a toxic disposal bin where I went to art school, but I’m not sure how to get rid of the stuff safely now that I’m no longer a student. Any tips?
