Chroma Interactives?
The quest for an oil-like acrylic experience continues….. I returned the Golden Open paints and exchanged them for Chroma Atelier Interactives. But I haven’t gotten them yet - Dick Blick is a little lackadaisical about the returns/exchanges. Hurry up, Dick!
Anybody have an experience they would like to share about Chroma Interactives? Please comment here or email me.
The Golden Open Acrylics just could not cut the mustard - I’m sorry to any fans out there, but the pigmenting strength was so weak, staying open wouldn’t have been enough of an asset to matter. I do love the regular Golden acrylics and I’ll keep using them.
My goal is to write about making acrylic look like oils. I’ve had a little success with this, learned a few things. But first, I want to find a more suitable group of products. And of course, knock out some really good results. But the first trials have been going okay…

Thank you Lisa!!!
I look forward to hearing more.
Lisa,
Winsor & Newton have a new Artist’s Acrylic, named just that. I just bought some but so far have only made a split primary color wheel.
But, at the Art Expo in Santa Fe, I saw a man painting with them and it did look like oils; which is why I bought them. They are supposed to not flatten out like regular acrylics and have a longer open time. They are strongly pigmented. He was using some kind of heavy gel medium (I believe) which is probably why it looked like oils. He said he could add a lot of the medium without affecting the color.
I have the Golden Opens and have only done one painting with them and have not been inspired to use them a gain. I don’t like not seeing any brushstrokes on top on the lack of strong pigmentation.
have you tried water soluble oils?
Katy I will have to try to find those.
Chris, yes, I have tried the water misc oils and found them lacking…. They seem to turn tacky quite fast and water lifts them, but they stain… sort of the worst of all worlds.
I did some work with the Chromas today and they are much nicer than the Goldens. Pigmenting strength is good. The reactivating spreay is handy - and then I can set them with a blow dryer. I wish I’d gotten the medium that adds body, but oh well. next time.
I’ll post a pic soon.
I had similar reaction as yours to the Opens after buying a sort of “starter” set. Following talks with Golden I read that their main intention was to be used in conjunction with regular acrylics. One of the main issues with acrylic users was the difficulty in blending, so many would resort to using oils on top of acrylic underpaintings to get the smooth blends they wanted. This, as I understand, was how the Opens become more of an advantage. The pigment load is also less than in the other acrylics, but to do the same effects with regular acrylics you’d have to thin them out more. The color choices is also currently limited.
No experience with the Interactives to share. The use of the spray turned me off to the idea.
I often switch between acrylic or oil painting, and people sometimes have difficulty telling them apart. It might be that my oils look more “acrylic,” since I tend not to do that much direct blending on the surface, and instead focus more on palette mixing.
