Sketch Theatre Artist Collaboration
Whoa! This video is just dazzling. Am filled with envy! Want! I must figure out a way to have a similar party around here. I wonder is Travis Louie and Gary Baseman ever come to Chicago??
From their site, here’s a list of artists, whoc all worked together to make a single big painting: “James Gurney, Michael Hussar, Audrey Kawasaki, Travis Louie, Molly Crabapple, Elizabeth McGrath, Miss Mindy, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez, KRK Ryden, Tara McPherson, Gris Grimly, Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, Yoskay Yamamoto , Nate Frizzell, Luke Chueh, Jeff Soto, Lithium Picnic, and many more.” How about that!

We once did a similar thing, spread out over a whole summer, on an unused 4×8 stage flat on the porch at the infamous 706 Illinois Street in Urbana. Everyone that lived there and guests as well were required to add to the painting. I wish we’d thought to take a photo of the collaboration before it became a used stage flat in some production at the Armory Free Theater or The Station. In a way I’m also glad we didn’t. The work exists only in the memories of those who participated, untouched and unspoiled forever. To this day the armada of hot air balloons held aloft by giant wedges of Swiss cheese attacking an alien landscape built off the body of Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.” is one of my favorite images of all time. And only a few of us ever got to see it.
