Description - Glazing is a technique for oil painting that involves applying thin layers of translucent paint over a completely dry underpainting. As opposed to “direct painting,” the advantages of glazing are that it enhances a jewel-like presentation, promotes a sense of atmosphere, and allows subtle shifts in chroma and hue. It allows the artist to approach a complicated subject piecemeal. For instance, glazing over a completed monochromatic underpainting in greys, browns, or greens allows the artist to work out complicated value transitions first before the issues are complicated with hue and chroma.

lg_glazing_11In this tutorial, artist Lisa Gloria goes step by step through the glazing of a porcelain vase painted with a toile pattern, to a high level of realism. The video includes specific instruction and a closeup view of the artist’s hand as she completes this process before your eyes. 8 minute video with introduction, closeups and voiceover.
